4 Home Remedies for a Cold

If you have a child who is under the age of two and has a bad cold there isn’t too many options out there at your local drug store.  So how do you help alleviate the runny nose, coughing and achy feeling for your kids?  Yes, you can use the old standby of giving them some acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed.  This helps with the aches but doesn’t really do anything for coughs or running noses.  So what can you try?  Here are 4 home remedies that many people swear by that you might just want to give a try:

  1. Baby Vicks – Baby Vicks can be used on babies 3 months and over.  Directions say to rub on back, chest and neck.  But to help with cough what many parents will suggest is rubbing the Vicks on your child’s feet and then covering with socks.
  2. An Onion – Cut up an onion and place in a bowl beside the bed of your sick child.  It is said that the onion absorbs the germs and sickness in the air and will help with overall health.
  3. A Humidifier – This is the most common home remedy found in most children’s rooms.  You can use a cool air or hot air (steam) humidifier.  Both act as a natural decongestant for your child.  The trick here is you don’t want your room to get too humid because this could also have negative results on your sick kid.
  4. Steam Shower – Close the bathroom door, turn the shower up hot and let the room steam up.  Spend 5-10 minutes in there with your sick child.  Works much like a humidifier would, but it’s free.  Some parents recommend taking your child outside in the cold air right after the steam shower too.  This is said to to help with congestion.

These 4 home remedies might not be a cure-all, but when your child is sick and uncomfortable it won’t hurt to give them a shot.  Not only could they relieve your child, but might help you get some sleep too.
