5 Parenting Lessons I Learned From Star Wars

vaderparentI am a Star Wars nerd. A proud one. So the other day I was thinking to myself, how can I incorporate Star Wars into my daily parenting life? Well, there are some parenting lessons to be learned from Darth Vader and the Star Wars Movies. So I came up with my list of :

1. The Force Doesn’t Work for Tracking Your Kids – Darth Vader had Princess Leia right in front of him and didn’t sense through the Force that it was his daughter.  So I guess tracking your kids through the Force isn’t the best option.  Luckily in today’s world we have cell phones, the perfect tool for tracking our children’s whereabouts.

2. It’s Okay to Have a Dysfunctional Family – So your father turns out to be a Dark Lord of the Sith and you just found out you kissed your sister.  Yes, just like in Star Wars most of us have dysfunctional families of some sorts.  Whether it’s half brothers, step sisters or cousins twice removed, Star Wars teaches us that we can all make it work.

3. All Parents Make Mistakes – Sure Darth Vader may have sliced off his son’s hand, but in the end he sacrifices his own life to take down the Emperor and save the day.  Hopefully our mistakes won’t be as big as that one, but Star Wars teaches us we all make mistakes, but we can overcome them and totally redeem ourselves.

4. Try Not. Do or Do Not.  There is No Try – A famous quote from Jed Master Yoda.  This may have originally been meant as a pep talk for Jedi in training Luke Skywalker, but these words of wisdom can be used in plenty of parenting situations.  Sometimes when you are changing a horrible diaper or cleaning up chunky puke you just have to do it.  There is not trying!

5. Don’t Negotiate – Princes Leia tries to negotiate with Darth Vader by telling him the secret location of a Rebel base to save her home planet of Alderaan.  What happens?  It gets blown up.  Just like in the Star Wars world, negotiating with your children will get you nowhere and may even make you blow up (in a sense).  Give them an inch and they take a mile.  So just say no to negotiation
